It might be a trick of the Sao Paolo light, but judging by the calibre of the rest of the house by Brasilian architects Studio MK27 it’s unlikely.  Instead I prefer to take this strikingly serene dining room as a timely reminder of two fundamental rules of interior architecture: never say never and seeing is believing.

Master Murano glass-makers Barovier & Toso do glamour with the best of them.  And perhaps no more effortlessly than at Milan design week, where the Murano icon reissued its fabulous vintage 1966 Samurai lamps, in new ‘extra large’ table lamp and pendant versions, exclusively for Euroluce.

I’m really taken with this new table lamp, the Knight Light, by New Zealand designer David Moreland.  And a quick scan just now of other works from the collection did not disappoint.  Dead simple, unpretentious, elegant, easy to use furniture, with more than a hint of Scandinavia in the mix.  A bit like an upmarket, well- edited Ikea really…  And after a couple of lost hours today spent traipsing around my local branch of the ‘Swedish’ megastore, I have to admit I’m definitely preferring Moreland’s version of events.  For me, the Auckland-based industrial designer has something of the air of a quiet achiever, in it for the long haul.  One to watch as they say.
